Joe and Toby Cohen emigrated from war-torn Syria in 1981. More than 35 years later, they are world-class entrepreneurs and owners of VCNY Home, one of the Top 10 home textile companies in the United States.
Young-spirited and eager to find normalcy and purpose post-emigration, the Cohen brothers created a modest life for themselves by working at a bedding and bath store in Brooklyn, New York. They climbed the ranks and within five years mastered just about every area of the business. Through perseverance, outside-of-the-box ideas, and a commitment to excellence, they purchased the business from their boss and quickly expanded it into a six-store operation.
International travel around the globe, from Spain, France, Portugal to Italy, gave the Cohen brothers a global competitive edge in their stores, as customers grew to appreciate the range of unique merchandise they carried at reasonable prices. In 1987, the company officially became an import business and began selling to small independent retailers and large retail shops across the country.
By the mid-90s, private-label manufacturing became a larger driving force for the business. With offices in Manhattan, they opened a warehouse in New Jersey and quickly grew into a multimillion-dollar company. In 2000, they created Victoria Classics (now VCNY Home, short for "Victoria Classics New York"), offering customers the same value and quality product they had come to appreciate over the years.
VCNY Home's wholesale operation is one of the leading importers of high-quality home textiles for bedding, bath and window accessories in the United States. Importing from various countries to accommodate value, cost, and trends is a key component to the company's success, allowing the business to continuously reach new heights and deliver premium products customers want—at affordable prices they love.
